The concept of "saloia or saloio" dates back to the Arab occupation of the Iberian Peninsula, around the 8th century. Etymologically the word derives from Çaloyo that designated the inhabitant of the rural zones of the environs of Lisbon - as Sintra.
Saloio's houses were built by its owner with local raw materials and contained elements related to its agricultural activity as a wood-burning stove, threshing floor, cellar or stable. Saloio's home, accessed by Portuguese sidewalk streets, was generally masonry, with a single floor, whitewashed contrasting with red and blue doors and windows.
